Abstract
Leak Detection is a big issue for pipeline operators, not only because of the loss in product but also because of the resulting pollution and the damage to the pipeline company’s image. Especially because the European Pipeline grid is overaged, it takes a lot of effort and maintenance to keep the lines safe. Regarding leak detection Germany has one of the strictest rules for transportation lines in the world. The TRFL which has recently be revised and reconditioned to now being even more precise when it comes to specifications and obligations the operators have to fulfill when running their pipelines. The presentation will give an overview on the improvements and amendments in the new TRFL and then focus on the best possible implementation of different leak detection technologies to put the TRFL in execution. Therefor different technologies are introduced and their advantages and disadvantages are defined to see which combination leads to the best performance in regards to safety and with best cost efficiency for different scopes of application. For a pipeline in construction for example other potential technologies can be used than for an already existing and buried line. Also pipelines that run through protective areas are subject to special ways of protection.
